yo-yo A decorative quilting technique created by sewing a running stitch on fabric circles and pulling its threads so the fabric gathers, like a drawstring, into a yo-yo shape. This whimsical process originated in the 1930s when women created yo-yos using scrap fabrics. They are commonly stitched together or appliquéd onto other fabric pieces.
